Chapter Nineteen

One of These Things Just Doesn’t Belong

After a long, hot bath, Cameron’s mind was drifting away from the invoice she was trying to finalize so she could get paid from her last job. She could not focus. Two questions kept pushing into the front of her mind, making it impossible for her to complete her work.

The first was Will’s dismissive attitude to her pseudo-abduction. She’d brought it up again after the meeting as she was preparing to leave, and he just brushed her off, saying he’d follow up with the detective on the case and let her know. The way he said it made her doubt his sincerity. She’d heard him use that tone with others while they were dating, and it usually meant he was just placating someone. It seemed like he didn’t care about her feelings at all. But if Will thought she was just going to let it go, he was sadly mistaken.

In the end, nothing bad had happened. Neither Jack nor his men had done anything to harm her. But still, shouldn’t he care just a little bit? And he was a detective. Why wasn’t the mystery of what they were doing there driving him nuts like it was her? She kept going over it, searching her mind for any hints they may have dropped while she was around, but there was nothing. That Jack kept his crew at a distance now seemed planned. The only thing she had given them was the printout of the processor logs. It contained a list of every button pressed in that house for the previous week, but she doubted they would be able to read it. It wasn’t written in code per se, but all the identifiers were MAC addresses and serial numbers of individual components. In a way, it was like a stenographer’s shorthand. At first glance, it looked impossible to read, but with the right training and education, it was easy. And unless they went back on-site, they wouldn’t be able to determine which device was where, so it wouldn’t help them all that much either way. Unless they used EvryWare.

She sat up abruptly, jarred by the thought. Could she find out who did the install and get into the system? She had the address. And if she could find out who did the job, she could get the client’s name and maybe be one step closer to what Jack and his crew were after. She’d be a step ahead of Jack and the Brooklyn PD because she’d have a name for whoever was using that system. She smiled to herself and made a mental note to ask the crew at EvryWare.

There were a few things she could do herself. One was trying to trace the phone number Jack had given her on his business card. But that was a dead end. She found no results after entering it in several search programs. She even uploaded the picture she’d taken of him and run it
